- Sheriff R.K. Curtis (1843-1913). Robert Keith Curtis, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Curtis, was born on 27 July 1843 in Gloucester County, Virginia. During the Civil War, Curtis served in the Confederate cavalry and was wounded at Gettysburg. Curtis was elected sheriff of Elizabeth City County in 1891 and served until he died on 13 July 1913 after a long illness. He is buried in Thorpland Cemetery in York County, Virginia.
