Inhabitants Requested Pamunkey Neck Not Be Made a Separate County
Pamunkey Neck, the land between the Pamunkey and Mattaponi Rivers, was a part of King and Queen County when that county was created in 1691. In May 1695 the burgesses for King and Queen County asked the General Assembly to create another county. In response, various inhabitants of Pamunkey Neck submitted this petition to the House of Burgesses indicating that not all the people of Pamunkey Neck wanted to have their land divided into a separate county. In 1701 King William County was created out of King and Queen County, including the land of Pamunkey Neck.
