The First Anniversary of the Armistice Was Celebrated

At 11 AM on November 11, 1918, an armistice was signed between the Allied nations and Germany temporarily ending the hostilities of World War I as a prelude to peace negotiations leading to the Treaty of Versailles. In the United States November 11 has been celebrated yearly ever since. In 1938 Armistice Day became a federal holiday, and it was renamed Veteran's Day in 1954. This guide to Richmond's first celebration of Armistice Day was not only a program of events held the week of November 10–15, but also included a listing and sketches of some of the military divisions and units in which Virginians served.
