The Richmond Planet Was Published
The front page of the African American weekly newspaper,The
Richmond Planet, carried news of local social clubs, reports of marriages and events at the city's churches, advertisements, and a poem praising the newspaper and its editor, John Mitchell Jr. (1861–1929). It includes two notices: "THE ONLY MEDIUM
for Advertisers Desiring Colored People's Trade" and "EVERY COLORED MAN
Should Have This Journal in His Home." While the newspaper's contents had similarities to the contents of newspapers published by and for white readers, it also carried reports about lynchings, racial bias, segregation, and other forms of discrimination and abuse against African Americans.
