James Monroe Wrote to Governor Beverley Randolph

James Monroe (1758–1831) wrote this letter to Governor Randolph (1754–1797) soon after reaching Philadelphia to take his seat in the United States Senate. Monroe served as a senator for Virginia from 1790 to 1794, and in 1817 he became the fifth president of the United States. This letter updates the governor on Monroe's actions since arriving in Philadelphia, notably that he has not been able to do much besides attend Congress because of a cold that he caught on the journey from Virginia.
