Governor Almond Wrote a Memo to the Secretary of the Commonwealth

In 1958 the cruiser USS Roanoke was being deactivated and a set of silver serving dishes was in the ship's inventory. The set had been given to the U.S. Navy in 1906 to be used on the battleship USS Virginia. That ship was retired in 1922, and the set had been used on the USS Richmond and on the USS Roanoke since then. In this memorandum, Governor James Lindsay Almond (1898–1986) asked the secretary of the commonwealth to research what action the General Assembly had taken when the Commonwealth of Virginia presented the set for use on the USS Virginia. The set was returned to Virginia and is now used at the Executive Mansion.
