A Photograph of Grace Matthews and Soldiers Was Taken

This photograph, taken at Camp Patrick Henry in Hampton Roads, is of World War II veterans and twelve-year old Grace Matthews from Manila, Philippine Islands. She had just arrived in the United States with more than 200 others who had been liberated from Japanese prison camps in the Philippines. The caption on the image adds that "she was happy to be in America, but memories of seeing her father and 249 other men given the barbarous water treatment (pouring water down men's mouths and noses) were still vivid."
