78 1917 May 26. Six members of the Va. Branch Nat'l Woman's Party, accompanied by Miss Edythe Hansche of Baltimore descended upon Petersburg on Saturday and were met by Miss Thomas, Mrs. Reynolds, and Mrs. Sydnor. At the office of the Index Appeal the party met with the usual cordial welcome and hospitality of the manager Mr. Rogers and the members of the office force. Mrs. [Sophie Gooding Rose] Meredith, Miss Hansche & Mr. Louis Kracke were the speakers at a large street meeting held in the afternoon, and they were assisted by Miss J[ulia]S. Jennings Mrs McCrone, Mrs Hudson and Mrs Percy Read [Marion Gould Thorp Read] who distributed literature, secured members and "passed the hat." Eighteen members were secured at this meeting and several politicians were said to be converted to the platform of the Woman's Party. M.T. Read Sec.
