John B. D. Smith to Isaac Hite, January 1832
Isaac Fontaine Hite was born May 7, 1807 in Middletown, Frederick County, Virginia, to Major Isaac Hite Jr. and his second wife, Ann Tunstall Maury. Major Hite (1758-1836 ) was a grandson of Joist Hite (d. 1761), who emigrated to the American colonies in about 1710 and later settled in the Shenandoah Valley after obtaining a land grant from Virginias Governor and Council in 1731. Hite grew up at Belle Grove, the family estate in Middletown, Va. In 1827 he went to the University of Virginia and later returned to Frederick County to take up farming. He and his brother Walker inherited property from their father. Isaac Hite Jr.s will described the Rockville tract of land as standing at about 1700 acres. Isaac married Maria Louisa Davison (1805-1889) and they had two children, Anna Jacqueline Hite, who would later marry John William Wright, and Isaac Fontaine Hite Jr.
