To the Honorable the General Assembly of Virginia - The Petition of Betsy Boswell of the town of Harrisonburg and county of Rockingham, respectfully and humbly sheweth that your petitioner, formerly a slave of Henry J. Gambile of the town and county aforesaid has been purchased from her late master by her present husband James Boswell, of the town of Harrisonburg and county aforesaid, by whom she has since been emancipated Your petitioner begs leave to represent to your Honorable Body, that the united exertions of herself and husband, have enabled them to acquire a title to certain real property in the town of Harrisonburg, the disposal of which would be attended with considerable sacrifice to your petitioner and her husband - Your petitioner is desirous of continuing with her husband in the enjoyment of the property which several years of honest industry and economy have enabled them to procure, having indulged the hope that they were securing for themselves, a comfortable residence, which they would be permitted to enjoy in their old age; and for this purpose, she prays your Honorable Body to be permitted to remain in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Her fair standing heretofore, will she hopes, afford a pledge that her future good conduct, may in some degree merit the favor she now solicits at the hands of your Honorable body; and your petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray &c Betsy her X mark Boswell
