To the Honorable the Superior Court of of Montgomery. Law of the County- The petition of Ruth, Abraham, Rhoda, Armistead, Washington & Juliet, Charles humbly sheweth, that they are held in slavery by James Sallust of that County of Montgomery- They are advised that such attention on the part of said Sallust is illegal in that they are entitled to their freedom. They ground upon which your petitioners claim their freedom is, that your petitioner Ruth the mother of the other petitioners was imported into this Commonwealth subsequently to the first day of one thousand seven hundred & seventy eight & that the conditions described by the act of assembly were not performed by the person importing her your other petitioners have been born since their mother has been in possession of Sallust and your petitioners pray for leave to sue in forma pauperis in your Honorable Court to assert their freedom & that Council may be assigned them
