To the Honorable John Cloptone Judge of the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for the county of Powhatan. Your orator Emanuel a free man of colour and a pauper Most respectfully begs leave to represent to your honour, that your orator instituted a suit of form & paceporis against Elizabeth Pleasants in the circuit Superior Court of Powhtan County for the recovery of freedom in the year 1840, that the said suit was continued from court, to court, for 3 or 5 terms in consequence of the non attendance of his witnesses, that at the last November term of the court in 1842, the cause coming on to be tried Your orator was decreed free by your honor, all which will more fully appear by reference to the dec'rs and proceedings & copy which is hereto annexed, which your orator prays may be taken, and considered as a part of this his bill of complaint, that the said Elizabeth Pleasants will knowing that he was justly entitled to his liberty ever since the year 1811 has hired your Orator out and has rec'd his hire for the year 1840 and 1841. that the said Elizabeth Pleasants by her agent hired your Orator Cap. Joseph Wien for the year 1842, for $90 which will be due at the end of this year (to wit, 1842 and will recive the same without the aid, and interposition of the honorable court. To the end therefore that the said Elizabeth Pleasants and her agents, and attorneys, and the said Joseph {illegible} D of May on their several and respective corporal oaths, true answers make to the allegations to this bill, as if the same were home again interrogated and repeated, That given may please to injoin the hire of your Orator for the year 1842 for $90 on the hands of the said Capt Joseph {illegible} until the further order of your Honor, and may give such further, and other relief in the premises as may consonant to Equity and good common, and that your honor may grant the commonwealth most gracious writ of subpoena & Injunction to be directed HH And your Orator as in duty found will be or pray +c +c.
