In Henrico County Court May 7th 1840. George Schafer, an alien, who has lately arrived in the United States & is desirous of being naturalised a Citizen thereof, this day appeared in Court, and in pursuance of the Act of Congress, made a report of himself, which report is in the following words, to wit: "I Geo: Schafer make the following report of myself to the County Court of Henrico, that is to say I report that I was born in Rottenburgh, Dutchess of Hessen, Germany, on the 11th day of March 1803 being now in the thirty eighth year; that I am a subject of the Elector of Hessen, owing allegiance to him & none other; that I migrated from Germany to the United States on the 5th day of May 1836, and that I arrived in the City of Richmond on the 20th July 1836, and that I intend to settle myself in the County of Henrico in the State of Virginia, one of the United States of America. Given under my hand the 7th day of May 1840, George Schaefer." A Copy Teste. Loftin M. Ellett C.H.C. In Henrico County Court May 7th 1840. George Schafer a native of Hessen, Germany, this day declared on oath that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce forever, all allegiance, or fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to the Elector of Hessen. George Schafer who has migrated into this state this day made a solemn declaration before the Court that he intends to reside in Virginia, and it is ordered that the said declaration be entered of Record so that the said Geo: Schafer may be entitled to purchase and hold lands, tenements and hereditaments within this state, as if he were a citizen thereof and of the United States.
