UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, TO WIT. I, EDMUND I. LEE, Clerk of the United States Circuit Court for the District of Columbia for the county of Alexandria, do hereby certify, that at a Court continued and held for the District and County aforesaid the eighth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight and of the independence of the United States of America the sixty second Thomas Burns came personally before the said Court, and made oath in due form of law that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States, and to renounce for ever all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty whatever, and particularly to the sovereignty of the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland which is ordered to be recorded and certified.
