State of Virginia Rockbridge County We, Justices of the peace for the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do certify that Nancy J Shorter the Wife of John T. Shorter whose names are signed to the writing above and bearing date on the 14th day of July 1868 personally appeared before us in the County aforesaid and being examined by us prively [privately] and apart from her husband and having the writing fully explained to her she the the said Nancy J Shorter acknowledged the said writing to be her act and declared that she had willingly executed the same and does not wish to retract it Given under our hands this 18th day of July 1868 R Y Patterson JP J.
