James Gilmer Mabe was born 7 January 1924 in Mercer County, West Virginia, and moved with his family to Blacksburg, Virginia. He was inducted into the United States Navy 15 March 1943. Mabe served aboard the U.S.S. L.S.T. (Landing Ship Tank) 46 from 18
