Abstract

Charles Robert Hartt was born 21 April 1916 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. By the time of his enlistment on 25 March 1944, Hartt was assistant manager of the J. C. Penney's store in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Captured by the German Army 21 December 1944, Hart was held as a prisoner until the end of the war in Europe. Hartt worked for J. C. Penney's before and after World War II, starting as a stock boy and retiring as manager of the Harrisonburg, Virginia, store. He married Mary Alice Miller (1916-2004) 16 August 1938, and they had two children. Hartt died 8 September 2002 in Rockingham County, Virginia, and was buried in East Lawn Cemetery in Harrisonburg.
