Abstract

Contains an English translation of a letter written in French from [Jacques] Legardeur de St. Pierre, commander at Fort Le Boeuf, to [Lieutenant Governor Robert Dinwiddie], regarding a letter from Dinwiddie addressed to the Commandant of the French Troops delivered to him by [George] Washington. According to Legardeur de Saint-Pierre, he plans to transmit Dinwiddie's letter to the Marquis Duquesne regarding the rights of France upon the lands along the Ohio River. In addition, Legardeur de Saint-Pierre writes that he will not obey Dinwiddie's summons for him to retire and contends that no act of hostility has been committed by the French. Note that the translation is mistakenly dated as 15 February 1753.
